2005 was a year of natural disasters. The pictures we all saw of the animals left behind in Hurricane Katrina tugged at our heartstrings. Photos of dogs on roofs or tied to patios or balconies left us wondering how we can avoid this situation and help to get these animals to safety or back in their "parents" loving arms.
The first thing you can do is contact the powers that be in your area about opening more pet friendly shelters. A lot of people who lose their lives in storms do so because they will not leave their pets behind to go to a shelter. I know I wouldn't and you probably wouldn't either.
Other ways to help is to make year round donations to animal rescue organizations and shelters. So please, take a moment to use our links to donate, not just at disaster time, but all year. If you can't make a monetary donation, maybe leaving a bag of dog food at the shelter or volunteering to walk and play with shelter dogs.
