I'd love to introduce you to my new friend, Lisa Smith, founder of the Canine Liver Disease Foundation.   Lisa's beloved Reiley was diagnosed with canine liver disease in October 2008.   Unable to find a website that contained comprehensive information on this serious canine illness, after Reiley passed, Lisa created the Canine Liver Disease Foundation in Reiley's memory.

This site is filled with relevant and timely information to help pet owners who are searching for information about this serious canine illness.   It discusses signs and symptoms (which are often subtle and insidious), the types and causes of canine liver disease, testing and diagnosis, treatment options, and, most important, prevention measures.

The Canine Liver Disease Foundation is a comprehensive resource, and I would urge everyone to share this information with anyone who is loved by a dog.

Did you know?

Vinegar kills yeast.   To help prevent ear infections in your dog, use a cotton ball soaked in a mixture of white vinegar and water to clean your dog's ears once a week.  Gentle and all natural!

CLEAN THAT CRATE!

Here's a quick tip to make cleaning Rover's crate easy:  Take it to the car wash!  Using the high-pressure wand at a do-it-yourself car wash makes quick work of stubborn, hard-to-remove "gunk".  Place in the sun to dry.

Herbal Tea helps with musculoskeletal inflammation and pain

4 C water or low-sodium chicken broth
1/4 C dried crampbark
1/4 C dried corydalis root
1/4 C dried meadowsweet leaves
1/4 C dried boneset

Combine ingredients (available at your local health-food store) in a small stainless steel or ceramic saucepan, cover, and simmer over low heat for 30 minutes.  Turn off heat, keep covered, and let set for 4-6 hours.   Strain and discard any solid materials.  Freeze in ice cube trays, and thaw as needed at room temperature.  OR refrigerate up to 2 weeks.

Give to your dog (1 tsp. per 20 pounds of body weight) in food or with a syringe three times a day until symptoms subside.

Pet Poison Alert: Please Discontinue Use of Peanut Butter!

In light of the recent  FDA recall on peanuts, the ASPCA is advising pet
parents to temporarily keep pets away from peanut butter products,
often used as treats for dogs.

 JUST FOR FUN

Dogs are easier than children because they:

  1. Eat less.
  2. Usually come when called.
  3. Are easier to train.
  4. Don't ask for money all the time.
  5. Don't drink or smoke.
  6. Don't hang out with friends who use drugs.
  7. Never ask to drive the car.
  8. Don't have to have the latest fashions.
  9. Don't want to wear your clothes.
  10. Don't need a gazillion dollars for college, and
  11. If they get pregnant, you can sell their children
